Kenmore®/MD 50-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine

Only at Sears! Computerized, 50 built-in stitches, LCD keypad...the list of features goes on and on. A great sewing machine for someone with experience. And rest-assured that Kenmore is Canada's #1 selling brand of major appliance.

Worst Sears product I've ever bought

onOctober 15, 2012
I have always owned Kenmore sewing machines and this one is the worst one I have ever bought. With only a 90 day warranty (most manufacturers have 1 year) there's not a lot I can do about getting it fixed either. My fault for assuming Sears covered it for the year. About 10 months old and has only sewed one quilt and one baby quilt and it has quit working properly. The controls are not user friendly, for example the reverse is so close to the needle if you are right handed you have to watch you don't run over your left hand as you guide the fabric though. To switch from straight to zigzag you have to hit a button 10 times and 10 again to go back. Lots more not so well thought of. My first Kenmore machine lasted over 36 years this one never made 1 year. Not the quality I expected from Sears.
Cons: bad design and terrible warratty

The bobbin casing is plastic, just like so many parts today. I have been using my machine for 8 months and am now having to replace the bobbing casing due to thread wear. Extremely frustrated. I have had nothing but problems with the wires being loose in the machine causing problems with the foot petal. I have had just as much down time as up since I have owned the machine. The machine is no longer running smoothly. I have made sure to clean the machine and keep up regular maintenance.
Cons: Not well constructed, plastic pieces, poor manual

Great machine, runs smoothly and quietly!

onNovember 23, 2011
I found it easy to use. It functions very smoothly and it was so simple to change settings using the electronic keypad. It was my first electronic machine and I will never go back to a standard machine!
Pros: Easy to clean, Well constructed, Comfortable, Stylish

Kenmore MD 50-Stitch Sewing machine

onNovember 18, 2011
I recently purchased this machine. Find it is very easy to use. Hopefully it will last as long as my last Kenmore (34 years). I have not had an opportunity to use all the features but I am sure from my experience so far it will perform well. The one item that I would like to see more explanation on is the thread tension. From what I have seen all the adjustments have to be done on the top thread. Overall a nice machine for the hobby sewer.

Awesome machine!

onNovember 3, 2011
After using my mom's machine for way too long, I bought this one and I'm loving it. As my first sewing machine purchase, I was wondering if I should have gotten such a fancy machine but now I'm thrilled with my decision. I have more options than my mom's machine offers which will make future projects that much easier to do.
Picked it up a few days ago, just tested it and I don't want to stop sewing! There are so many stitches to choose from. I love the straight stitch options, with the auto reverse stitches or auto-locking stitches at the beginning.
The only negative things I have to mention are:
1. The soft case is a cheap piece of plastic that you could have gotten from the dollar store. But is a good reference if you want to make your own.
2. The storage drawer has a tiny opening on the side, so when you take it off the machine things fall out. And to get one item out you have to dump everything out.
3. I have yet to find in the manual any mention of how to control the amount of pressure on the pressure foot. As I know I will be sewing with stretch fabrics frequently and the pressure has to be less on them, this is a fairly big negative.
Pros: Well constructed, Comfortable
Cons: cheap soft cover, poorly designed storage drawer

Great machine

This sewing machine is fantastic, really quiet and easy to use. The stitch selection is amazing and lots of fun to try them out. I have really enjoyed sewing on it and it has brought back my interest in sewing.
Pros: Well constructed

Great for Price!

onApril 6, 2011
At this price point the machine is good value with many features found only on higher end sewing machines. And it is quiet!
Actually this is a pre-review as it didn't work out of the box and my wife was ready to pack it up to return. She asked me to trouble shoot it (a common occurrence). Pat has been sewing for a very long time and knows what she's doing -- but I read the entire manual and set out to see what the problem was.
Well I did find it. There is a "very" clear piece of tape across the head slots where you thread your needle. It is really not that noticeable! But of course if it is left in place the thread breaks the minute you start sewing. It should be either a different colour or have the word "Remove" on it. I threaded this machine several times before I saw it.
The good stuff: the machine has a lot of features only found on high-end sewing machines and is a SUPER VALUE.
In my research for a machine to add to the fleet I noticed it appeared to be a carbon copy of the Janome DC1050 (US model).... it is and there are web reviews to be found.
No doubt I will write a more complete review after my wife does her quilting magic with it. It really is 5 stars, but not if you forget to remove the clear tape and send it back :)
